Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Her grandfather, her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer who was also the first Roberts to arrive in Atlanta. Her father's passion for theatre was inherited by her. in theatre from an early age. In 1952, while an undergraduate at Emory University, he performed in several productions in Atlanta. When he was stationed in Biloxi Mississippi, he received his induction into the air force in 1953. Betty Lou Bredemus was part of the show as well. In 1955, the couple married and, in 1956, their son Eric Anthony was born. Walter and his wife left the Air Force in the year 1957 after which they began enrolment with Walter as a student at Tulane University. Walter was a part of the Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio at the time the family relocated from Atlanta to Decatur in Georgia in 1960. The year 1964 was when Walter along with Betty Lou began production on the local Saturday morning children's TV show named Bum Bum and His Buddies which they financed themselves. Later that year they founded The Actors and Writers Workshop which ran for six years. They welcomed in 1965 two new children: Lelisa Billingsley and Julia Billingsley.
